The Diploma of Interior Design equips aspiring interior designers with the knowledge and skills to create functional, innovative, and aesthetically pleasing spaces. This course introduces foundational interior design concepts, project planning, and essential software tools, progressing through practical projects and theoretical coursework to refine your expertise.

Throughout the four blocks of study, you’ll engage in hands-on studio work and real-world projects designed to build confidence and foster creativity. The curriculum emphasises client needs, sustainability, building codes, and industry standards, preparing you for a dynamic career in interior design.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Students must be 17+ years of age at the time of enrolment. 
  • Demonstrate a satisfactory level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) abilities
  • If you have already successfully graduated from Certificate IV in Interior Decoration, you will receive a credit transfer for the completed units.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer

If you’ve completed relevant study, training, or have industry experience, you may be eligible for a shorter program duration through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer. 

RPL allows us to determine if you’ve already achieved any learning outcomes of specific subjects in the Diploma of Interior Design. If sufficient evidence (i.e. academic transcripts, course outlines, references, and awards) confirms you meet the subject requirements, you may receive Credit for specific subjects or Units of Competency. 

Eligibility for RPL 

  • Previous units of study or qualifications must align with the current training package 
  • Study or qualifications must have been completed within the past five years 
  • Applications for RPL are submitted during your program application process 

VET Credit Transfer is available if you’ve: 

  • Successfully completed equivalent units with another Registered Training Organisation 
  • Previously studied similar units 
  • Gained extensive work experience in a related field 

ISCD recognises units of study and qualifications completed within the past seven years for current training packages.

Design and Colour

 

You will explore the theory behind colour and colour relationships, then learn how to specify colour schemes for both interior and exterior spaces. Here, we teach you the basic skills of drawing and rendering and the elements and
principles of design.

Design Practice

 

We focus on setting up your own interior design business from scratch and teach you the fundamentals of business, including branding, documentation, compliance, and ethics. You will also learn the history behind interior design and how to apply this to your own practice.

Block Two

Drafting and Spatial Design

 

Learn the fundamentals of spatial planning for kitchens and bathrooms as you develop 2D technical drawing skills both by hand and in digital format using SketchUp.  Explore various rendering techniques and understand and explore spatial design in 3D.

Interior Decoration and Styling

 

Discover the breadth of interior decoration as you experiment with soft furnishings, lighting, furniture and styling; applying this knowledge as you design a styling project covering all phases of the design process.

Block Three

Technology-Integrated Design

 

You will dive deep into how technology is evolving in the world of interior design and how to apply this to your practice. You will expand your skills and knowledge of AutoCAD and SketchUp and create documentation, including floor plans, elevations and sections. You will also discover the changing world of ‘smart home’ technology and what you need to know as a designer.

Property Restoration:

 

Here, we take a step back in time to appreciate and understand the restoration process and its historical influence on interior design. You will focus on designing interior decoration solutions for restoration projects, including analysing the project brief and researching solutions for the decoration of interiors according to conservation and heritage requirements. You will also start creating your own body of work by beginning to build your portfolio.

Block Four

Commercial Interiors:

 

This subject expands your design skills and knowledge for application in the commercial space. You will learn how to adapt your creative thinking to meet the needs of commercial clients as you create concepts and design solutions for the workplace and retail environments.

Residential Interiors:

 

Finally, you will bring all you have learnt into practice as you develop a complete proposal, including a full site evaluation, specifications for furniture, fixtures and fittings, and adapting a concept to multiple usage areas. This final subject and assessment task will see you applying your accumulated interior design knowledge through competent use of software work tools to create a professional-grade residential design solution.
