What’s The Difference Between Styling And Interior Decoration?

We get lots of people asking what’s the difference between studying Styling and Interior Decoration, so we thought we would explain some of the advantages each course offers.

 

Styling Diploma

A Styling Diploma at iscd gives you specific styling skills applicable to a variety of styling jobs, not just interior styling. For example, you learn about editorial styling, product styling, visual merchandising and residential styling. You’ll focus on understanding spacial planning, soft furnishing, building a resource book of suppliers, how to successfully answer a client brief and how to manage projects including fees and contracts. You can then apply these skills to:

  • Event styling
  • Stage design
  • Floristry
  • Interior styling
  • Product and retail styling
  • Editorial styling

This course is an industry recognized diploma. It has an entry requirement of completion of the Certificate IV in Design (CUA40715 or equivalent) to gain sound knowledge in colour and design foundations.

Full time is 1 day a week for 2 terms (6 months).
Part time is 3 hours a week over the space of 4 terms (1 year).

 

Certificate IV In Interior Decoration

The Certificate IV in Interior Decoration (MSF40113) is a larger commitment based on a heavier work load. You will learn styling specifically for residential interiors (no other styling outcomes) and spend more time on the execution of decoration ideas for interior spaces to client specific briefs. For example, you will learn technical drawing & rendering so you can present full interior schemes professionally via InDesign and Photoshop. You do more advanced colour work in applying colour schemes to interior projects. And your suppliers source list will be more extensive covering a wider array of products. You will also get a foundation in business documentation and fees in this course.

You graduate as a qualified Interior Decorator. You can advise on a range of jobs from residential styling to complete internal schemes, either as a sole trader or as a consultant to architects and re-developers. This course is a nationally accredited certificate.

Full time is 4 days a week for 3 terms (9 months).
Part time is 2 days a week over the space of 8 terms (2 years).
